LRSU releases new reports
LRSU's Data and Research Team recently published two new road safety reports. 'Powered two wheeler casualties in London' looks at the safety of motorcycle riders in London. 'Mobile phone and seat belt usage rates in London 2009' monitors the wearing of seat belts by vehicle drivers and passengers and mobile phone use by drivers in London. Both reports are available in the Data and Research section of this website.
LRSU attends Road Safety Expo '09
LRSU highlighted successful casualty reduction at a stand at the Road Safety Expo at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre during November. The stand emphasised the multi-stranded approach taken by LRSU and the importance of effective partnership working. A short film created for the event will soon be available online.
Prior to the QEII event LRSU invited colleagues from around the world to visit Palestra and hear from the Mayor's Transport Advisor Kulveer Ranger. The guests visited London Traffic Control Centre and tested the Intelligent Speed Adaptation cars. Delegates were also joined by Abu Barkatoolah from Lambeth Council and Mahmood Siddiqi from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, who kindly showcased road safety layouts in their boroughs.
LRSU attends Road Safety Great Britain conference
The annual conference concentrated on road safety good practice from across the country. Keynote speakers Dr Fiona Fylan and Dr Lisa Dorn, both readers in psychology, focussed on young drivers, and why they behave in a way that puts them at high risk on the roads. There were also presentations from Road Safety Officers from across the country, showcasing initiatives that have been developed and implemented to date.
Safe Drive Stay Alive runs in Havering for the fourth year
LRSU has supported Havering's Safe Drive Stay Alive production for the fourth year in a row. Year 11 pupils from across the borough are invited to the hard hitting show aimed at cutting the number of young drivers killed or injured on London's roads.
Motorcycle safety event
LRSU's Motorcycle Policy Unit recently held an event to launch the new working arrangement between the Metropolitan Police Service's Motorcycle Tasking Team and LRSU. Under the new arrangement, LRSU employ the services of the tasking team full time, providing a dedicated resource which will concentrate on education, enforcement and work related road safety. The launch also saw the rebrand of BikeSafe-London and ScooterSafe-London.
LSCP rewards competition winners
LSCP's annual poster competition in aid of Road Safety Week received hundreds of entries. Winners were visited during Road Safety Week and presented with a certificate and vouchers. A number of posters have been selected to appear in the LSCP's 2010 calendar. Every school pupil who took part will receive a calendar.
LRSU attend Motorcycle and Scooter Show
Staff from LRSU's Motorcycle Policy Unit attended the Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. The show is a focal point in the biking calendar.
LRSU attends Amsterdam conference
LRSU attended the Fourth Driver Behaviour and Training Conference over the 24th and 25th November in Amsterdam, Holland. Themed on new initiatives in the scientific enquiry of road user behaviour, education and training from an academic and practitioner perspective the conference was well received by all who attended. The conference papers have been compiled and will be published in 2010.
