TfL launches Cycle Safety Action Plan
TfL's draft Cycle Safety Action Plan sets out how cycling can be made safer in London. It draws on recent experience in cycling growth in the capital and knowledge about what is needed to improve safety.
The number of people cycling has increased in London in recent years, while the rate of cycling casualties has declined. But safety is still a serious issue and is the main reason people don't cycle.

LRSU attends partnership working event
LRSU recently joined colleagues from Cycle Training, School Travel Planning, Safety & Citizenship and the London Boroughs at a partnership working event. The session included presentations, discussions on best practice and networking opportunities.
LRSU's Moonwalking Bear returns
The cycle safety campaign popularly known as the 'Moonwalking Bear' is currently running in cinemas and online. The advert, which can be viewed at www.dothetest.co.uk and 'You tube', looks at the issue of change blindness which is the idea that some drivers miss seeing the unexpected.
LSCP gears up for Road Safety Week
LSCP have received hundreds of entries to their annual poster competition in support of Road Safety Week. Winning entries will appear in the 2010 LSCP calendar. The calendar will also feature road safety questions, hints, tips and advice which can be used by teachers or parents as an introduction to key road safety and speed related issues. LSCP will visit the schools of winners and runners up during Road Safety Week to award prizes.
LRSU look forward to Road Safety Expo 09
Road Safety Expo 09 is taking place on November 12th in collaboration with Transport for London. LRSU look forward to the impressive speaker line-up, focussed topics and exhibitions. LRSU will be exhibiting and look forward to meeting visitors.
LRSU represented at European roundtable event
LRSU were invited to attend the '4th European, National and Local Levels in Road Safety Management' roundtable in Turin following their involvement in the eSum project. Steve Connolly, from the London Motorcycle Policy Unit, joined the group in discussing road safety results from the passed decade and looking at future priorities.
LSCP educates South London Communities
The LSCP organised collision reconstructions in Lewisham, Croydon and Merton during October. Each event involved the LSCP and emergency services creating a mock collision in a busy town centre. The demonstrations, which have attracted media attention, illustrate the consequences of speed and the work of the emergency services in recovering a crash.
LRSU hosts global visitors
LRSU were recently visited by professionals from Argentina and China. Bo Yumin, Director General of the Chinese Department for International Cooperation and visited on 2nd October. She was accompanied by Marcus Long, Head of External Affairs and Neil Hannah, Director of Accreditation, Compliance & Risk at the British Standards Institute (BSI). The party were keen to gain an insight into general road safety matters and to learn how LRSU keep up to date with road safety regulations. Pablo Martínez Carignano, General Director of Road Safety in Buenos Aires city, Argentina, visited on 7th October. Chris Lines conducted the introductions for both visits, followed by short presentations from each department within LRSU. LRSU has received positive feedback from both visitors, thanking them for their useful information and time.
LRSU warn young Londoners 'Don't be in the dark about autumn road risks'
To remind teenagers of the need to stay visible when nearby or using London roads, LRSU have produced a limited edition reflective wristband with the slogan 'THINK! Don't let your friendship die on the road'. The band will be given out at exclusive concerts and among London youth centres to get teenagers talking and subtly bring road safety to the forefront of their minds.
LRSU publish quarter one statistics and analysis of pedal cyclist fatalities
'An analysis of casualties in Greater London during the first three months of 2009' and 'Analysis of police collision files for pedal cyclist fatalities in London 2001 - 2006' have been published and are available at the following link below.
BikeSafe-London, LSCP and Enfield join forces to educate motorcyclists
Advice and guidance about safer riding was offered to visitors to Enfield Town Centre on October 31st. BikeSafe-London, Enfield Road Safety officers and the LSCP joined forces to provide advice, guidance and safety tips to riders and non-riders. Police motorcycles, displays, leaflets and goodies were offered to visitors to the stand. BikeSafe and ScooterSafe Rider Skills Days were promoted to those looking to further their skills through the advice of professional police riders.
LSCP supports Safe Drive Stay Alive (SDSA) in Hounslow and Enfield
School pupils in Hounslow and Enfield have attended SDSA theatre productions during October. The LSCP supported the organisation of both events and a copy of the LSCP's Parent Pact has been sent to the home of every pupil who saw the show. The Pact is used alongside school visits and educational resources to extend the education value of the production. The Parent pack can be downloaded from the LSCP site below.
