Know your limits

Every day, 9 people lose their lives on roads and speed is a contributory factor in a large proportion of these deaths. Please drive carefully and stick to the speed limit to avoid becoming another statistic.

Street lights usually mean that there is a 30 mph speed limit unless there are signs showing another limit.

The speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. Driving at speeds too fast for the road and traffic conditions can be dangerous. You should always reduce your speed when:

  • the road layout or condition presents a hazard, such as bends
  • sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children, and motorcyclists
  • weather conditions make it safer to do so
  • driving at night as it is harder to see other road users.

These are the national speed limits and apply to all roads unless signs show otherwise.

Driving Safely

It may seem obvious but there really is only one way you can avoid a speeding ticket and that's to drive within the speed limit at all times. Just sticking to the limit when you think there might be a speed camera in operation is no guarantee you'll avoid getting caught and it certainly isn't the way to reduce your chances of being involved in a collision.

We would prefer not to catch you speeding, we just want everyone to drive within the posted speed limit and drive safely.

Always...

  • plan your journey and allow plenty of time to reach your destination
  • drive at an appropriate speed for the road and the weather conditions
  • stay calm and avoid conflict with other road users
